For the Man Who Has Everything on Father’s Day
Well if you’ve got half a million quid burning a hole in your pocket I have just the present for father’s Day. it’s an island with a small house and 89 acres of wild scrubland. You won’t be troubled by neighbours, but you will see plenty of great skuas, kittiwakes, shags and seagulls. And you might get a bit thirsty as there is no natural drinking water on the island and the wind can get a bit lively with 100 mph gales. We get that here on the beach where we live , but we only get these occasionally and with nothing like the regularity that Mullagrach, the most northern of the Summer Isles, experiences and not just in winter like we do.
The accommodation is a bit basic too with a single room and an outside cludgie. It does have a phone signal and solar panels and one of those pesky log burners the government is trying to legislate away. (We have one and think it the bee’s knees)The island is pretty remote and the nearest landfall is a half hour boat ride from the fairly inaccessible Achiltibuie peninsula. They had to helicopter in all the building materials and really you must be nimble to leap on and off the heaving boats. Those with mountain goat genes should apply. Oh and you can’t live on the island, you can only visit it and have short stays thanks to the planning people.
Now you might think that would mean not a lot of people would be interested. But no the estate agent has had a number of wannabe owners already after just a few days after the island has come onto the market. It seems the dream of getting away from it all is something that high achievers covet to the tune of many thousands of pounds.
